Day 17 - Southern AB Equine Centre

The Southern Alberta Equine Centre provides qualified instruction for youth in Pole Bending, Barrel Racing, Goat Tying, Tie-Down Roping, Team Roping, Break-a-way Roping, and Steer Wrestling.

The focus of our programs is on youth instruction. We also provide an evening once a week for adults and seniors to practice their skills in tie-down-roping and team roping.

The program has been in existence since 2009. Over the years we have helped hundreds of youth develop their skills. The mission of the Southern AB Equine Centre is to promote the sport of equine events with the highest type of conduct and sportsmanship. We want to preserve the Western Heritage and offer the privilege of family bonding. We also promote the therapeutic value of the human-animal interaction. The Youth Instructional Classes and Clinic provide students with one on one qualified instruction. This assists children and youth to build confidence, emotional awareness, social skills, trust and empathy, develop problem-solving skills, and develop and maintain relationships.

In 2021, we had approximately 50 youth participate in multiple event instruction. During the past 2 years, youth have experienced a sense of isolation due to Covid-19 restrictions. The spring clinic and the weekly classes allowed the youth to interact with peers who have similar interests and has created a strong bond between many of the participants.

Day 5 - Books for Babies

Books for Babies is a volunteer program that promotes reading as a family and offers families of young children free, carefully chosen books and information on the importance of reading to young children. They encourage parents of infants between birth and 12 months to share books and to read with their babies. The program has given out many hundreds of children’s books to new parents for thirty one years in the community.

A bag with two carefully selected age-appropriate books and resource materials introduce parents of newborns to the importance of early reading to their children.

Early shared book reading helps children become stronger and better able to cope with new situations in constructive ways. It helps them develop independence and become more resistant to crisis.

It is important in a child’s brain and behavioural development. Books for Babies program supports families in developing early literacy and language experiences and promotes healthy family relationships.

The program has continued to operate normally during Covid despite the extra complications for our nurses in the Cardston Health Unit and travel constraints for volunteers.

If you or anyone you know is interested in receiving a book bag, you can contact the Coordinator, Shannon Palmer, or contact the local Health Unit.
